We were thrilled to be invited to conduct a Debate 101 workshop at the inaugural Singapore American School Novice Debate Cup or SASNDC on September 1, 2018. Participants were provided a refresher of the fundamentals of argument construction and the importance of style when delivering a speech. Workshop handouts included quick tips and frameworks that participants could immediately apply for their upcoming debate rounds held later in the day. To encourage novice debaters, we ensured that participants set specific goals for the day e.g. to opt for simpler word choice over debate jargon, for self-evaluation and improvement.
Teck Wei Tan, a multi-championship winning debater, captain of the Singapore National team and RedDot Academy coach who headed the workshop also shared his personal debate journey and the speedbumps that he encountered to encourage novices that it’s never too late to start debating.
Big thank you to the SAS Debate Club seniors who volunteered as assistant coaches in group breakout and demo session! Pictures courtesy of SAS Debate Club.
