A two-stage foundation building course for students to gain clarity of thought and speech by acquiring and applying key debate skills.

Stage 1: Form & Defend

Form, defend and articulate a personal point-of-view

Pre-requisites

 

No prior experience in public speaking or debate required

Course Details

 

10 sessions x 2 hours (inclusive of 1 final showcase, Session 10)

By the end of this course,participants will be:

More confident to speak in front of an audience

Able to articulate and substantiate a point of view

Able to de-construct an opposing view

LearnHow To:

  • Construct and explain a point in its entirety
  • Strengthen & defend the validity of a point
  • Connect with an audience who is unfamiliar with a topic that is being presented
  • Influence an audience with intentional word choice and speaking styles
  • Approach an unfamiliar topic and still be able to create a point of view

Stage 2: REASON & PERSUADE

Develop arguments and engage in critical discourse across a range of topics

Pre-requisites

 

No prior experience in public speaking or debate required

Course Details

 

8 sessions x 2 hours (inclusive of 1 final showcase, Session 8)

By the end of this course,participants will be:

Able to approach a topic from multiple angles

Able to engage in complex reasoning and refutation

03

Adept at using deliberate word choice and speaking styles

LearnHow To:

  • Identify multiple types of positions/ stances that can be taken on a topic
  • Prioritise points that have maximum impact on a topic
  • Develop a position that is internally consistent
  • Learn how to weigh and compare issues of greater significance to the topic
  • Craft mechanisms/ policies to address a real world issue of their choice

CURRICULUM ADVISOR & COACH

Trainer  Profile

 

Sam is a professional debate and oratory coach working full time with schools such as Raffles Institution and Anglo-Chinese Junior College. He also regularly conducts training and workshops on debate, public speaking, negotiation, and model UN activities with a wide range of schools and institution in Singapore and abroad. Sam attended Harvard University on a Public Service Commission Overseas Merit Scholarship and has previously worked in the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law. Sam was also the Captain of the Singapore National Team for WSDC 2000, WSDC Adjudicator for Singapore in 2012 & 2015 and part of the WSDC organisational Committee in 2015. He has guided debaters and orators to over 30 championship titles, including international competitions such as the Asian World Schools Debating Championships; the Prometheus Cup and the Winter Holiday Open WSDC 2019.
